Roman Reigns has discussed his putting over of Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble last weekend, with the Scot going on to win the event and booking a title shot at WrestleMania.
The Big Dog was among the favorites to win the event but McIntyre, who’s been the subject of a strong push as of late, claimed the victory with a valiant effort that saw him eliminate Brock Lesnar before tossing Reigns out of the ring.
McIntyre revealed only finding out he was picked to win the Rumble late on Sunday, hours before the main event. And after that was decided, WWE had to come up with a plan to put him over in the best way possible.
Eliminating Lesnar could have seen to that, but adding Reigns to the mix made it as legitimate as it gets in today’s era. And Reigns had no problems helping McIntyre get his moment.
“To have that responsibility not only to start the show off but then to close it, and then make that moment to be able to put Drew to the next level and get him to that win to get him to WrestleMania, I take a lot of pride in that, and especially for a guy like Drew McIntyre,” the former Universal Champion said on WWE Backstage this week.
“He’s busted his a**, he’s really worked hard and he made his way back. When I came back they put me in his hands at WrestleMania so for me to be in that moment to have that opportunity to give back, that’s my deal right there, that’s what it’s all about.”
Perhaps None More Genuine
Of course, statements such as these shouldn’t always be taken at face value. That’s what you’re supposed to say, right?
In Reigns’ case, it’s very likely he’s spoken his mind as he knows all too well that winning a Royal Rumble is hardly all that important in the grand scheme of things.
WWE News: Drew McIntyre Speaks On His Issue With Brock Lesnar
Drew McIntyre is going to Wrestlemania, having won the Royal Rumble. It was no secret who he would be challenging at WWE’s biggest show of the year. He was the one to eliminate Brock Lesnar from the match, after Lesnar would eliminate 13 men from the match without help. From that moment, his path was clear. He would be the one to dethrone The Beast. McIntryre appeared on The Bump, a weekly WWE show that airs on Youtube. In it, he discussed what his problem is with Brock Lesnar.
“We Need The Title”
Many fans have issues with Brock Lesnar and his status as a part timer. Drew McIntyre doesn’t agree with this, but he has a separate issue with Brock.
During this time on The Bump, McIntyre made his issue very clear. “There’s nobody like him. This is one of the things that people get annoyed with him about like, ‘Ah, Brock’s never here annoys me,’ or whatever and I have a different view and I say, ‘Brock was offered his contract to do what he wants. He wasn’t forced to sign it. He signed a contract and he’s living up to his terms of the contract.’ I can’t get annoyed about that, I understand why people get annoyed about it. The problem I have is he has our title and I’ve been on the TV, all the live events and we need that title on there.”
Drew McIntyre Will Bring The Championship Home
It is hard to deny that Drew is spot on here. If WWE used Brock Lesnar as a special attraction, someone to face legends and make up and comers look amazing, fans would have few issues with this. Instead, he is constantly holding either the WWE or Universal Championship hostage. Fans will only see a handful of his matches in a year, while the top champion should be the face of a brand. This is not a new take, many have raised this issue as well. Drew McIntyre looks to change this, and bring the WWE Championship home to the fans. This will make him a hero to all. When you realize this, you begin to see exactly what WWE’s plan is here.
