Hopman Cup 2002: Roger Federer Has A New Partner
Switzerland were the defending champions coming into the 2002 Homan Cup. Roger Federer won the 2001 version with Martina Hingis beating Team USA. This year he had a new partner – Miroslava Vavrinec or as she would be called later, Mirka Federer.
They had just lost their match against Australia when they did this interview. There were many jokes cracked during this interview and there was praise for Martina Hingis by Mirka. She said that Martina was an amazing player and that nobody could replace her.
Roger Federer and Mirka’s Story
Mirka was a successful tennis player herself reaching a career-high ranking of 76. She met Roger at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Federer once revealed that they shared their first kiss on the last day of the Olympics. Mirka sadly retired in 2002 due to a persistent foot injury.
Since then, she has been Roger’s public relations manager and his biggest supporter. The couple married in 2009 and have had 4 kids since then.
Roger Federer is currently recovering from a right knee surgery that has ruled him out of a lot of tournaments. Since the ATP tour suspension has canceled many tournaments, he won’t be missing much.
Fans will be hoping that the ‘young’ Roger Federer will make a rapid recovery and be back on the court soon. They will be hoping that he will be able to protect his record from the threat that is Rafael Nadal.
