Six years ago, Andy Murray set up his own boutique sports marketing agency, 77 Sports Management, allowing him more control of his business affairs and giving him something to fill the void in his eventual retirement.

And it seemed that moment had arrived at the start of this year when the three-times grand-slam champion broke down in tears during an emotional press conference in Melbourne, uncertain whether his painful hip would allow him to make a farewell appearance at Wimbledon.

At the end, with Murray now back on the court as he continues with his bid to return to top-level singles, it turned out that retirement is already knocking at his door, beckoning on him to open.

Britain’s Andy Murray wipes tears from his face during a press conference at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Friday, Jan. 11, 2019. A tearful Murray says the Australian Open could be his last tournament because of a hip injury that has hampered him for almost two years.

“It was brilliant,” said the former world No.1. “I enjoyed it a lot. I was a little bit slow at the beginning but got better as the match went on. I’m very fortunate to be back playing tennis once again.

“I had said that I wanted to stop at Wimbledon, because I didn’t want to play anymore. I was getting no enjoyment out of anything.

“I was at that point in Australia, and I’m sure I’ll get there. And hopefully it’s a few years away, but we’ll see.”

“I have zero discomfort in my hip, like, nothing,” he reported. “So I’ll just keep pushing and see how it goes. But I feel optimistic about the future. I don’t know how long it will take to get to that level, but, you know, hopefully not too long.”

“I have spoken to a couple of players – I’ve been rejected a couple of times so far,” he smiled.

“But, yeah, if I’m feeling good, I will. I sort of asked a couple of people to play, but I need to wait and see how I’m feeling first, and if I feel good, then I would like to, yeah.”
