Andy Murray has joked that he’s used to being overlooked in favour of brother Jamie by his mum, Judy, after she opted to watch her elder son’s doubles match at Wimbledon instead.
The former British No.1 made his All England Club return after a two-year absence, partnering Pierre-Hugues Herbert to a 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-0 victory over Marius Copil and Ugo Humbert under the new roof on Court No.1.
At the same time, older brother Jamie was playing alongside Neal Skupski on Court 18 and took a two-sets-to-one lead before play was suspended for bad light.
Mum Judy was spotted watching Jamie’s match before it was cut short, and Andy reacted to news of the snub in typically playful fashion, reigniting his sibling rivalry in the process.
Asked if Judy has promised to come watch him next, Andy told reporters: ‘I mean, it’s not something we speak about. Jamie is the number one son, so… ‘He used to get all the good presents.
I kind of got like the hand-me-downs always since we were young, so I’m used to that. ‘No, I mean, look, obviously when the schedule is like that, she can’t watch both. She can’t be in two places at once.
There’s many times here when she’s been watching Jamie’s doubles, rushed over to watch my singles. Vice versa. Maybe they can do my mum and dad a favour and put us on at slightly different times would help.’
The two Murray brothers could face off in the third round, and Judy previously revealed that she would try to ignore the match entirely if that happened.
She told the BBC: ‘I’ve been fortunate that Andy’s career was singles and Jamie’s was doubles, so in terms of family harmony it’s been great because they actually haven’t competed against each other for a long time.
So if it happens, I’ll go to the pub and wait for a text. No chance [I’m watching]. That would be torture.’
