The American legend Serena Williams began her career as a naive teenager by picking up her first Slam at Flushing Meadows. Later, 38-year-old Williams was successful in lifting up a title as a mother.
Few months after delivering her daughter Olympia via C-section, Williams realized coming back on the circuit from childbirth was physically more painful than she expected. And becoming a top-notch tennis professional once again was an uphill battle.
“I think society puts it out there that you’ll just kind of snap back and that’s just a myth. I feel like it’s important for women to know that it doesn’t happen like that in the Instagram world. But in the real world, it takes a while for your body to come back. Especially after a C-section, I think it takes a little bit longer,” Williams explained during US Open 2018.
She further talked about everything that was going around during her recovery. “And not only that, like mentally and physically and dealing emotionally with providing for another child, it’s a lot that goes into it. And I was just living in this world where I thought it would just automatically come together. Yeah, my dress, I kind of look like a magical fairy, but it’s not happening. So I had to realize and live in reality,” she added.
Serena Williams’ first title since maternity leave
After her pregnancy layover, World Number nine Serena Williams made comeback at Indian Wells in 2018. She continued to play some incessant tennis and earned her spot in the finals of Wimbledon and US Open that year.
In the year 2020, Williams snapped her title-less streak since January 2017. She was victorious in Auckland and pulled off the first title in the fourth decade of her tennis career.

Venus Williams Says That Serena Is Her Best Friend
Recently, Venus Williams had a Q&A session on Youtube where she answered many questions posed to her by fans. One fan asked her who her good friend on the WTA Tour was, apart from Serena. Venus replied,
“I love everybody on the WTA tour but Serena, especially, is my best friend and my doubles’ partner.”
I don’t think anyone expected Venus Williams to say anything else. She and Serena are very close as sisters and have also done very well as a team. Apart from their singles’ achievements, they have won 14 Grand Slams and 2 Olympic Gold medals in women’s doubles, which are all absolutely amazing achievements.
We haven’t seen the amazing doubles’ pair play since the 2018 French Open where they lost in the third round. They were supposed to pair up again in 2019 at Indian Wells, but sadly, Serena retired due to a viral illness. Now, we won’t have the chance to see the doubles’ pair again for a while thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
The global health crisis has forced the WTA Tour’s suspension till July. However, that is assuming that the virus is contained by then. Looking at the current situation, that does not seem likely as the number of cases is increasing daily. If the situation does not improve soon, it is likely we will not see any tennis in 2020.
I am sure no tennis fan wants that. Serena and Venus Williams certainly do not want that. I am sure they want to play doubles together again and possibly win one last Grand Slam before they both retire from tennis.
