Christmas is getting closer and Simona Halep decided to get in the right mood by donating a considerable amount to initiate kids from Romanian elementary schools into the beauty of the sport that made her famous.
The Wimbledon champion donated 20.000 euros to help the gathering of funds for the project called “Tennis in your school”, according to sources of ziare.com.
The project, initiated by the Romanian Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Education Ministry, wants to raise the number of Romanian professional tennis players by initiating kids to tennis from an early age.
This comes as a result of the lack of young Romanian players in both the ATP and WTA tours.
In the current state, the Carpathian country has a pretty dark future. There is almost no one coming strong from the back of Romania’s current top players, Simona Halep, Monica Niculescu, Horia Tecău and Marius Copil.
Concretely, the project will delegate tennis coaches to schools and the children will get free racquets and balls.
The kids will practice tennis for one hour per week during the program sponsored by Halep. The Romanian tennis star is renowned for her frequent charitable deeds.
In fact, Simona even has her own foundation.
“Creating a foundation has been a longstanding wish of mine, but it is also a new challenge for me, through which I can give something back in the long run.
Together with my partners, I will try to develop long-lasting projects.
One of the foundation’s main goals is to leave a legacy long after my career is over.
When I hang up my rackets, I will dedicate 100 percent of my time to this project”. , Simona wrote on the foundation’s website.
