Serena Williams: “Roger Federer is the greatest of all time on and off the court”
Serena Williams is observing her family quarantine because of the Coronavirus emergency. In these days the American tennis player has talked about the difficulties she is facing in the dual role of tennis player and full-time mother, after the birth of her Olympia.
Both born in 1981, Roger Federer and Serena Williams have undoubtedly marked the history of our sport. While the Swiss tennis player has conquered 20 Grand Slam titles, the American is currently already at 23, in addition to having accumulated 319 weeks at the top of the female ranking.
During the Hopman Cup 2019, Federer was partnering his compatriot Belinda Bencic and Williams was in tandem with the American Frances Tiafoe. “I was so excited, and literally it was the match of my career. Just playing someone so great, and someone you admire so much, and a match that actually means something – it’s not often that happens,” the American champion shared.
“It was really cool to play someone still in their prime, like me, both in our primes. I’m kind of sad it’s over. I mean the guy is the greatest of all time, both on and off the court,” the 23-time Grand Slam champion added.
“It was great fun. What a pleasure. What an honour. Thank you for making it possible. I was nervous returning. People talk about her serve so much and I see why it is such a wonderful serve because you just can’t read it” – Federer explained ahead of 14,000 fans in Perth and millions around the world who had eagerly awaited the contest.
