Naomi Osaka claimed another Grand Slam title in 2020 to enhance her reputation as one of the best female tennis players of her generation.
The Japanese star won the US Open in September by defeating Victoria Azarenka in the final, and she now has three major titles in her young career.
Many tennis fans have compared the 23-year-old to tennis legend, Serena Williams.
In a recent interview, Naomi talked about the constant comparisons to the Williams sisters that she and her sister received in the early stages of their careers.
Naomi Osaka has attributed her success to her competitive relationship with her sister
Naomi and her older sister, Mari, were expected to be the next version of Serena and Venus when they burst onto the tennis scene.
In a recent interview, the Japanese revealed that her sister gave her the motivation to play tennis since she would always try to outdo her when they were growing up.
The 23-year-old said, “As a kid, I was pretty lazy. I was always chasing my sister. A lot of people compared us to Venus and Serena.”
The Japanese star claimed that she did not mind the comparisons to the Williams sisters because they shared some similarities to the successful duo.
Similar to Venus and Serena, Naomi and Mari started playing tennis at a young age, and their father, Leonard Francois, coached them even though he did not have a tennis background.
Venus and Serena are still the best sibling duo in tennis
According to Osaka, her father introduced her to tennis when she was 3 years old, and by the time she was seven, she knew that she would be a professional tennis player.
The Japanese star has had significant success compared to her older sister, who is yet to win her first WTA title. Even though Mari has struggled to establish herself in the tennis game, Osaka has attributed her accomplishments to the competitive relationship she had with her sister.
Mari is currently ranked 331st on the WTA rankings, while Osaka is currently the third-best player in the world.
Mari and Naomi are still a sensible comparison to Serena and Venus.
Like the previous pair, Serena, who is the younger of the two siblings, has gone on to have more success than her older sister.
She has won 23 Grand Slam titles in her career, while Venus has seven major titles. Both players have achieved the number one ranking over the course of their careers.
Many fans hope that Naomi and Mari play a match against each other at a WTA tournament before they retire. Serena and Venus have met 30 times, with Serena holding an 18-12 winning record over her sister.
Additionally, the two tennis stars have won 22 doubles titles together. While Naomi and Mari still have time to replicate the success of the Williams sisters, it is obvious that the two have set a high bar for other sibling tennis players to clear.
