He knows that his professional tennis career is winding down, but Stan Wawrinka has vowed to “push himself to the limit” one more time in an attempt to make it back to the top.
The 36-year-old made his professional debut in 2002 and 18 years later he is still going strong despite having plenty of ups and downs.
He is a three-time Grand Slam winner having won the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open while he reached a career high of No 3 in the ATP Rankings.
However, he suffered several serious injuries over the past few years and as a result dropped out of the world 250 at some point.
Although he has made steady progress since returning to full fitness, he is yet to get back into the world top 10.
Wawrinka, though, hopes to reach the top one more time before he eventually calls it a day.
“I’m close to the end of my career,” he said. “But I also believe I have one last push that I really want to, again, one more time push myself to the limit, make the sacrifice that you need to make to be at my top, and I’m trying to do that.
“I’m going to try to even push it more during the off-season and see what next year brings.”
He added: “I think in general my form has been going okay. It’s been going well. I’m playing well. I still need to work on many, many aspects.”
