Serena Williams put an open letter out on her social media. The letter is in support of Meghan Markle, following the ‘Tell all’ interview of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry with Oprah Winfrey.
In the interview that the estranged royal couple gave to Oprah, they didn’t hold back. They talked about racism within the Royal family.
About how a few members of the Royal Family raised concerns about ‘how dark’ their baby would be.
Meghan even said that she was denied counseling or other help even though the Royal Family saw she was suffering emotionally. Meghan said these kind of behaviors almost drove her to suicide.
The interview clearly touched a chord in Serena’s heart who spoke out. Serena herself has often been the target of racial abuse. On the eve of International Women’s day Serena took to social media to talk about her ‘selfless friend’.
She said Meghan’s words are proof of the ‘pain and cruelty’ she had experienced. Serena also spoke about the daily racism that women of color go through. She said she wanted her daughter, Meghan’s daughter, and also the reader’s daughter to grow up in ‘a society driven by respect’.
‘Will be fighting for equality until my death’: Serena Williams
Serena Williams has in the past often talked about equality for black people. She is a voracious supporter of the BLM(Black Lives Matter) Movement and also a crusader for equal pay for women in Tennis. Sometimes those talks don’t go down too well within her own tennis world.
I would never ask anyone to stop fighting for equality. In everything she does, Serena shines a light on what all of us must fight for in order to achieve equality for all.
Billie Jean King, a former World no.1 had commented in 2019 that Serena has just had a baby, she is back on the court, and that should really not worry about equality etc at this point.
To that Serena had replied, she will be fighting for equality until her death.
