Former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova says that she has no plans to get into coaching or make a comeback to tennis, in an interview to The New York Times. The Russian announced her retirement earlier this week but said she does envision becoming a coach or coming back like Kim Clijsters or Serena Williams, who she says can break records in women’s tennis..
“No. I promise everyone. It’s tough to compare everyone’s positions when it’s time. I think everybody has very different things going on in their life, and I think for women there’s also the conversation of family, which is obviously a big part of Serena’s comeback after stepping away from the game for a little bit of time.
But I think if there’s someone who can break records it’s her, and I have no doubt that she can”. The 32 year old said she wants to have children and never saw herself being a mother and a tennis player, partly due to the separation from her parents when she moved to the United States when she was a child.
“ (I) wouldn’t know how to do both.. dedicate hours and hours on your body and on your strength and on the court.. Those are never the circumstances I wanted to have a child around… That (separation from my mom) definitely influences a lot of decisions that I’ll make in the future.
There’s the expression, ‘You make plans and God laughs’, and I really hope he doesn’t laugh. I’ve really had such good relationships with my mother and my dad but I want to give my children a sense of peace and a sense of just home”.
The five-time Grand Slam champion also spoke about her doping ban and says she remains proud of how she went through the situation and came back from it. “It was a situation I had to go through, and I did it in the most honest and humbling way.
And to be in my position and be so vulnerable and to say I made this mistake and to go through two trials, keep training the way I did and then come back and go on court and compete with the same amount of love for the sport is an incredible example. And I’m proud of that”.
Serena Williams Uses Vegan Leather In New Fashion Line As ‘A Lot Of Things Are Being Killed’
‘I feel like a lot of things are being killed and we’re not saving the earth’
Tennis icon Serena Williams has revealed why she used vegan leather in her new collection for her fashion line.
The former World No. 1, who has won a massive 23 Grand Slam titles so far in her career, opened up about the inspiration behind her creative choices for the Serena Spring 2020 collection.
Vegan leather
Speaking to ESSENCE, Williams described the line as a ‘fashion passport’, inspired by some of her favorite places to travel.
“Ultimately, when I thought about it, [it] was Africa,” she said. “That’s where I got the giraffe print from.”
She then spoke about why she had chosen to use vegan leather in the collection, saying: “And then also the vegan leather because I feel like a lot of things are being killed and we’re not saving the earth. We can all just do one small thing and help out so that was also a lot of our inspiration.”
‘Inherent greatness’
The fashion line features a number of animal-free leather options including the Sasha Vegan Leather Blazer, and the Sasha Vegan Leather Pant.
According to the Serena site, the line is aimed at ‘celebrating and championing all women’, empowering its customers by encouraging them to use the hashtag BeSeenBeHeard.
The brand says: “Our goal is to amplify their inherent greatness with clothes that are unapologetic and beautiful – pieces that women feel confident in, that reflect their truest selves.”
