23 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will be on the five-player U.S. team for the Fed Cup tie against Latvia that will take place at Everett’s Angel of the Winds Arena on February 7 & 8th, according to The Seattle Times.
This will be her first appearance on the Fed Cup team for the United States since February 2018 when she played doubles with sister Venus. Serena has a 13-0 record in singles and 3-2 record in doubles at the Fed Cup. The captain of the U.S.
Fed Cup team Kathy Rinaldi says, “Having Serena on the team makes us stronger and will be inspiring for all of us. We will be bringing an exciting team to Everett”. Rinaldi says 11th ranked Madison Keys, 15th ranked Sofia Kenin, 19th ranked Alison Riske and 25th ranked Sloane Stephens have all indicated that they are ready to play in the tie.
She has until January 28th to announce her complete team but says she hopes to do so before that. The winner of the tie advances to the 12-team Fed Cup finals, to be played in Budapest, Hungary, from April 14-19. The tie is a best-of-five match affair and has two singles matches on Friday and the reverse singles and the doubles match on Saturday.
Williams is currently in Australia where she won the ASB Classic title in Auckland – her first title in three years and the first since she became a mother. She is in Melbourne for the Australian Open where she hopes to win her 24th Grand Slam title and equal the all-time record held by Margaret Court.
