Serena Williams and Common called it quits after two years of what seemed like a blissful relationship. In a recent interview with a Chicago TV station Common confirmed what many had been been speculating for years and detailed on what led to their break up.
Asked how he felt about tennis (which was presumably code for Williams) he said he still had “a high respect for tennis,” but was “definitely a single man.” Here’s what you had to say: Eileen commented via Facebook: “I was hoping that they would make it. Then again, what couple does nowadays?” Althea wrote via Facebook: “Sad to hear.I thought they made a good couple.”
Serena Williams and Common went their separate ways after two years of what seemed like a blissful relationship. “But everything is good with tennis,” Common added. A “source” close to the star athlete and rapper recently told In Touch Weekly the two “just grew apart.”
Common has nothing but positive things to say about his ex-girlfriend Serena Williams. When asked whether she’ll return to tennis after injury, he told TMZ, “She’s a champion, you know she will.” He also called the 40-year-old, “the greatest tennis player to ever play, one of the greatest athletes to ever do it.”
Williams’ spokeswoman said the athlete will return for the 2018 season. Common and Williams dated from 2008 from 2015, but there’s been no bad blood since their split. It was previously reported that the two were going out to dinner in November. A source close to the stars said at the time that, “they are, and have been, good friends.”
“I think he’s a great guy,” she said at the time. “He’s obviously a great artist who is timeless and classic. You can’t beat that. But I have to focus on tennis because that’s my goal in life.” The Breakup: Serena confirmed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2010 that she and Common were done for good by April of that year.
“His schedule is actually worse than mine,” she said. “He didn’t want the responsibility. It’s really tough.” When she was told that he sang her praises to Access Hollywood (“[She is a] beautiful, intelligent woman, fun and spiritual woman. I think she’s an incredible person.”), she was confused.
“So I called him and I was like, Why are you saying all this stuff when we’re not together?” she said. Common later opened up about the breakup in 2015 to Meredith Viera, telling her that “it was kind of a mutual break-up but she initiated it. It’s okay though, we’ve got a great understanding and I care about her as a person … so we can keep that friendship.”
Serena Williams And Her Ex-Boyfriend Shared Love Scene: There’s many reasons why we should all aspire to Be More Serena Williams whenever possible. The first, obviously, would be her incredible sporting achievements, the second her excellent handling of difficult situations. Of course, the fact that she’s also best friends with the Duchess of Sussex certainly doesn’t go amiss either—and you can add her latest public appearance to the list, too.
Earlier this week, the tennis star casually walked the red carpet with her ex-boyfriend, who she was in a longterm, three year relationship with a number of years ago. Single-handedly proving that exes can totally be friends and leave all drama at the door, Serena and rapper Common reunited for a good cause—to attend a charity event together in Chicago.
Common and Serena Williams dated
Williams dated Common, a musician and actor, on and off for some time, before the pair eventually called things off for good in 2010. Since then of course, she’s gone on to find love and now has her own family with Reddit co-founder husband Alexis Ohanian and 1-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.
Not only did Serena and Common pose for photos together, but they also held their collaborative Creative Minds Talk for a huge audience. The session, The Art of Storytelling, saw the pair lead a conversation together on the topic of public speaking, philanthropy, activism and entrepreneurship. They also did a great job of making me feel real petty for blocking every ex I’ve loved before.
In fact, the ex-couple have remained on good terms ever since their split first happened. Common often congratulates Serena on social media for her sporting success in the tennis world and, in a 2015 interview on The Meredith Vieira Show, the rapper explained: “We’ve got a great understanding and I care about her as a person … so we can keep that friendship. It’s not like a person you talk to every other day, but you still have that respect and you still have that love and you want to see them do well.’
