Recently Barcelona FC’s defender, Gerard Pique was in touch with Roger Federer’s management company TEAM8’s CEO, Tony Godsick, and at the moment Roger Federer shows no interest in playing Davis Cup. Pique is part of the organizing committee of Davis Cup Finals and he wants the top-notch tennis players to participate in the event.
The demise of Hopman Cup has given rise to a tournament called, ATP Cup where the ATP men will be representing their nations by teaming up with their compatriots. World Number three, Federer prefers to ATP Cup instead of Davis Cup.
“It’s normal that he (Gerard Pique) has to say that and that the topic comes up again when Davis Cup is played. It is also clear that he is talking to Tony Godsick (Team8 president and CEO) I do not necessarily plan on playing in the Davis Cup right now,” Roger Federer said.

Federer continued to address their discussions with Pique. “There are no conversations going on, as he said. They talk, but that’s more general, regarding Laver Cup, Davis Cup or whatever. But these are also more conversations with the ITF and not directly with Pique. Personally, I hope that the Davis Cup goes well on stage – as well as the ATP Cup,” the Swiss added.
Further, Roger Federer mentioned about the reason why the elite ATP men will prefer participating in ATP Cup than Davis Cup. The schedule of ATP Cup suits all the tennis professionals. It’s at the very beginning of the year, players are energetic and fresh. Also, they will get some competitive practice for the Australian Open major tournament.
“At the ATP Cup, the top players are there because they want to play in Australia anyway. The Davis Cup is certainly not happy. It will certainly be interesting,” Roger Federer mentioned.
