Just a few days after announcing her upcoming swimwear collection, tennis champion Naomi Osaka is taking a new swing into the world of skincare.
In an interview with Business of Fashion, Naomi opened up about the new venture, explaining how her upcoming skincare line will differ from other celebrity-endorsed products on the market.
“For me, this project is something that requires more than just being a spokesperson.
This is a public health need,” Naomi said. “I used to tell people that I didn’t need to wear sunscreen — but even if you have melanin, you need to take care of your skin, and I am passionate about that.”
Her hope for the brand, as noted by Bustle, is to place a harder emphasis on skin protection for people of color. Protecting and rejuvenating melanated skin tones is an important goal as it is a severely underserved market.
Naomi also made the brand’s name, KINLÒ, a love letter to her heritage, combining the Japanese and Haitian words for “gold.” The line will include an SPF 50 sunscreen, protective body spray, SPF 40 tinted face lotion, and more.
“I never thought I would ever start my own company, but I’m super excited to announce that I’ll be launching KINLÒ, a new brand of skincare products developed to protect and rejuvenate melanated skin tones,” Naomi wrote on Instagram.
“I hope these products can help a lot of people and potentially save lives because I really feel that we aren’t protecting ourselves as much as we could.”
And as made clear by the comments section, fans couldn’t be more thrilled. “Can’t wait Queen!!! I’m so proud of you!” wrote one fan, while another said, “This is amazing!! Proud of you.”
While we’ll have to sit tight until an official launch date is announced, we do know that all products will be sold for under $20, making it an incredibly affordable collection — and a total grand slam.
