Serena Williams reached yet another milestone in her illustrious career, as she competed in her 1000th professional match on the WTA Tour.
The 39-year old competed in the second round of the Italian Open 2021, where she lost to Nadia Podoroska in straight sets. Although, she ended up losing the match, yet several congratulatory messages poured in for Serena Williams.
Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas were among the NextGen stars to send in their wishes for Serena Williams.
Novak Djokovic, 17 time Grandslam champion, also recognized the greatness of the American, and sent a heartfelt message. The Serbian has also established himself as one of the tennis greats, after his incredible achievements in the past decade.

Novak Djokovic who is also currently competing in Rome, had some special words reserved for Serena Williams.
The Serbian believes that Serena has been an icon for tennis since the past two decades, and has inspired several people with her on and off-court activities.
“Congratulations on your big milestone playing the 1,000th match in your career. Words cannot describe how much you’ve contributed to tennis in general, both the male and female sides.
You’ve been an icon for this sport, thank you so much for everything you have done on and off the court and what you keep on doing,” said Djokovic.
“You inspire myself and many other players on both the men’s and women’s side. We are so excited to share the same era as you as well.
Wishing you all the best champ, keep going and happy to still watch you on the court,” he added.
As for Serena Williams, she will now compete at the French Open 2021, which begins later this month. Last year, she had to withdraw from the second round of the French Open, owing to an Achilles injury.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round of the Rome Masters, and has booked a place in the quarterfinals.
