Former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport says that Novak Djokovic wants to break the record for most number of Grand Slam titles won in men’s tennis and has his eyes firmly set on beating rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal when it comes to the all-time record.
Speaking on the Tennis Channel, the American says, “We saw him almost in tears when Serbia wasn’t able to win the Davis Cup and you saw how much it meant to him, his team-mates and country. [But] he goes into the off-season and what does he do – at the ATP Cup he was so fired up and ready to go.
When he is emotional and it means so much to him he plays his best tennis. He was absolutely rock-solid in the ATP Cup got more confidence and momentum for the Australian Open and how he is really playing for history. He’s playing for the Grand Slams and everybody thinks that this is going to be a race that goes down to the wire between the three of them.
Novak firmly believes he has something to prove, to try to end with the most Grand Slams and that’s what he is fired up for. It gives him a reason to play for the next few years and a big reason to care.” The 32 year old Djokovic currently has won 17 major Grand Slam titles in his career, with Nadal coming in second at 19 Grand Slams and Federer leading the race currently with 20.
With Federer being 38 years old and recently having undergone another knee surgery, the race could come down to Djokovic and Nadal barring any major injury disruptions to either of them. The two split the four Grand Slams between themselves last year and Djokovic started the 2020 season with the Australian Open title.
The next Grand Slam scheduled is the French Open which takes place at the end of May, Nadal has won the French Open a record 12 times (in the last 15 years). Djokovic has won the French Open only once in his career.
