EXCLUSIVE UPDATES– U S Open 2019 See What Federer Crushes Evans Out As Djokovic, Serena Williams And Konts Prepares For The Big Game Tonight…

Published

on

Welcome back to the Evening Standard’s live coverage of the US Open.

Roger Federer returns to the court on Sunday following his easy win over Dan Evans and will look to reach the quarter-finals by defeating David Goffin.

Serena Williams takes on Petra Martic for a place in the last eight, before last Briton standing Johanna Konta battles women’s third seed Karolina Pliskova.

The likes of Ashleigh Barty, Elina Svitolina and the feisty Daniil Medvedev are also in action, while there will be no shortage of interest in a clash between defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka.

Still to come…

Novak Djokovic will close out Arthur Ashe Stadium against no.23 seed Stan Wawrinka in, arguably, the tie of the fourth round in the men’s draw.

Before that, however, no.5 seed Elina Svitolina takes on no.10 home favourite Madison Keys.

If you’re after some doubles action, Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands will take on no.5 seeds Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar in the mixed in about an hour.

Williams on her injury…

“I just rolled it, I don’t know why. I was volleying and it just went over. That was a little frustrating but I wanted to get it compressed really fast so that’s what I did [with the medical timeout].

“It affected me a little mentally because I’ve had a rough year with injuries and I thought ‘Oh my god, not again! I’m finally walking’ but thanks to you guys I got through it.”

Williams is through!

The American had to shake off an ankle injury to breeze past Martic 6-3, 6-4.

A big performance from the 37-year-old and to celebrate a victory on the 2nd birthday of her daughter, what a moment for Serena.

Martic hangs on in the second set but now it’s Serena’s turn to serve for the match at 5-4 up.

She hasn’t been broken since the very first game. It’s a tall order to expect her to slip up now.

Williams in control

See, we knew it was just a matter of time before Serena Williams got going.

The American recovers from a break down to win the first set 6-3 against 22nd seed Petra Martic. The 37-year-old is also a break up in the second set and seems to be in control on Ashe.

A quarter-final tie with Qiang Wang, who beat Ash Barty, awaits the winner, but that looks increasingly likely to be Williams.

Konta goes on…

“Honestly, just to keep going more than anything. With Karolina, there’s going to be massive portions of the match where I didn’t really know what I’m doing out there or don’t feel very effective.

“It was about trusting that the fundamental thing I was doing was the right thing. Overall, I’m really pleased to have played a great match here.

“To going one step further than the fourth round was a massive achievement for me.”

Konta speaks on court…

“As I came in, as you said, you felt goosebumps so imagine how I feel! Honestly, thank you so much for coming out and enjoying this match. It was a pleasure to play and a pleasure to play in front of you.”

After a gruelling two hours and 25 minutes, the British number one has knocked out the no.3 seed.

For the first time in her career, Konta is into the last eight at Flushing Meadows. A tremendous fightback from the 28-year-old today.

BREAK! Konta 6-7 6-3 6-5 Pliskova

Wow!

Konta steps it up and with three break points, she converts after Pliskova knocks a tired forehand into the net.

One game away from a massive victory!

Konta 6-7 6-3 5-5 Pliskova

Konta shows her skill on the serve too, holding to love and forcing at least another two games here.

Now we’ll see what they’re made of.

Konta 6-7 6-3 4-5 Pliskova

The Czech fires a 111mph serve down the middle and that’s a huge statement as Konta struggles to get her racket on it.

All of the pressure is on the Briton now.

Konta 6-7 6-3 4-4 Pliskova

After all of the breaks in the second set, we’ve now had eight consecutive holds.

Konta looks to have the edge here, but against a top three player like Pliskova, you can never truly write them off.

Konta 6-7 6-3 2-3 Pliskova

The tension is filling the air in the stadium and the crowd seem nervous too.

A crucial game coming up now. Konta simply must hold or hand the advantage back to Pliskova.

Konta 6-7 6-3 1-2 Pliskova

The Czech holds onto her serve… just.

This match is a bit of a knife edge and it may take something special – or a tiebreak – to separate the two today.

A shaky start for Serena Williams in her fourth round tie against Petra Martic.

The American has been broken in the very first game. Like Federer, she has struggled early on in matches before recovering later on.

Against 22nd seed Martic, she may have a difficult match on her hands.

SET!

Konta 6-7 6-3 Pliskova

What a recovery!

Konta rallies from 3-1 down to take the next five games and force a final set against Pliskova after a tremendous shot down the line.

Incredibly, Pliskova did not win a single point on her second serve in that set. Astonishing. Something for Konta to target?
BREAK OF SERVE

BREAK! Konta 6-7 5-3 Pliskova

What a turnaround from Konta!

Many would have written her off at a set and 3-1 down but finally, she produces the quality we all know she’s capable of.

It’s a sumptuous backhand winner on the approach to the net that has got her within a hold of forcing the final set. Super fightback from the 28-year-old!

BREAK! Konta 6-7 3-3 Pliskova

That’s more like it!

A love break for Konta and she’s finding some rhythm against Pliskova in this set.

Konta 6-7 1-3 Pliskova

The Briton is usually so powerful and clean with her hitting, but it’s just not happening for her today.

Pliskova breaks again and holds onto her serve to lock down the break. A long way back from here.

Konta 6-7 1-1 Pliskova

It looks like this could be the beginning of the end for Konta after being broken in the first set.

But the Brit gets back on level terms immediately to show Pliskova she’s not letting go without a fight.
