The Eurosport expert Barbara Schett has no doubts; Novak Djokovic is capable of winning more Majors than Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal! The Serb has been the dominant player in the previous decade and he is also younger than his closest rivals, claiming the only Major played in 2020 so far and reducing the gap to Roger Federer to only three most notable titles.
At the end of 2010, Federer and Nadal had won 23 out of the last 26 Majors, leaving all the rivals on the biggest scene behind them and entering 2011 with 16 and nine Majors, respectively. Novak Djokovic conquered his first at the Australian Open 2008 and had to wait until 2011 to increase his tally, producing a dominant season that saw him winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
From that moment, the GOAT race was pretty much up and running, with Nadal looking like the player to beat after Roland Garros 2014, trailing only three Majors to Federer and leaving Novak eight behind him. Djokovic made a response at Wimbledon a couple of weeks later and was ready to lead the Major race in the years to come, claiming 11 of the last 23 titles at four prominent tournaments of our sport to reduce the deficit to Federer and Nadal.
Struggling with an elbow injury, the Serb performed the best possible comeback at Wimbledon 2018, lifting five Major crowns during the latest stint to keep himself within reach of the players in front of him ahead of their future battles.
As we all know, there’s a big chance for the Australian Open to remain the only Major played in 2020 due to a coronavirus, with Wimbledon already closing its gates and Roland Garros and the US Open pretty much lingering in the dark at the moment.
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have won the last 13 Major tournaments and it should be interesting to see if the streak will continue once the action resumes, with the young guns waiting to take the throne from them and embrace tennis glory for themselves, something that has been the mission impossible so far with three legends around.
