On Sunday, while the tennis world was glued to the proceedings at Roland Garros, tennis greats Serena Williams and Andy Roddick were having some fun of their own. It was not much fun for Roddick, though, as he was the one in the middle of a ‘roast’ on Sunday.
Roddick’s wife Brooklyn Decker hosted the ‘roast of Andy Roddick’ in an online event. The roast was organized for a good cause as the proceeds will benefit the ‘Andy Roddick Foundation’.
It was still a roast and Williams had some fun pulling Roddick’s leg. It was all in good taste and Roddick later said he still feels Serena Williams is ‘the best’, even after the tennis legend made ‘fun of his life’.
How Serena Williams trolled Andy Roddick
One of Williams’ most hilarious comments over Roddick was when she pointed out that Roddick won as many Grand Slams in his career as she did while in pregnancy. Roddick won the 2003 US Open which is the only Grand Slam to his name. Williams won the 2017 Australian Open without dropping a set and while she was a couple of months pregnant.
She also said, <em>“When we played as kids, I knew right away that this guy would be average.” There is actually an interesting story about the same. Williams had beaten Roddick on the junior circuit when the fellow American players faced each other as 9 or 10 year-olds.
When Williams defeated Roddick in a match
Recently, Roddick spoke about the same after Williams reminisced about the incident. Roddick said she considers it among the top-5 wins of her career. Williams reminds him of the match every time they talk, Roddick expressed.
“Every time we talk she brings this up. There was this story where she sent me a link where she had list her top 5 victories of all time. And sandwiched between one of her many Slam wins was a victory over me,” Roddick said.
The former men’s world number one also said that Williams considers beating Roddick as an indirect win over other male counterparts. “I was kind of her springboard to her having an indirect win over Roger, Rafa, Andre, and Pete. So, in her mind that is an important victory,” Roddick added.
Williams records prove that she is one of the greatest tennis players ever, across men’s and women’s tennis. While she still chases a record-equaling Grand Slam title, her primary focus will be overcoming her Achilles injury.
