Novak Djokovic has responded to Roger Federer after the Swiss maestro congratulated him on reaching 20 Grand Slam titles. After brushing aside Matteo Berrettini on Sunday to claim his sixth Wimbledon Championship, Djokovic drew level with Rafael Nadal and Federer at 20 Grand Slams a piece.
Federer, 39, tweeted: “Congrats Novak on your 20th major. I’m proud to have the opportunity to play in a special era of tennis champions. Wonderful performance, well done!”.
The Serbian ace responded: “Likewise, Roger. Thank you very much for your kind words!”
Rafa Nadal also chimed in, tweeting: “Congrats @DjokerNole on this amazing achievement. 20 Grand Slam titles is huge and it is amazing that we are 3 players tied on this. Well done and, again, congrats to you and your team for this!”
Wimbledon had a new sense of aura about it this year. Federer was ousted in the quarter-final, and Nadal did not enter due to the pandemic, which gave other players a huge chance to make a name for themselves.
Unfortunately for them, Djokovic was still in the competition and looked as devastating as ever.
He has so far won the Australian Open, The French Open, and now Wimbledon this calendar year.
The only other tennis player in the Open Era to achieve a calendar Grand Slam was Steffi Graf in 1988.
Djokovic will be looking to add the US Open to his 2021 collection and overtake Federer and Nadal’s record of 20.
Djokovic has been the dominant force in tennis for the past few years, catching up to rivals Federer and Nadal in terms of accomplishments, and now finally surpassing the two great men.
Federer is 40 next month, and his future is in doubt after being knocked out of Wimbledon this year in the quarter-final.
The now world number nine conceded that even he does not know if he’ll ever play at Wimbledon again.
The ‘Big Three’ have dominated men’s tennis for the past two decades, and their accomplishments will most likely never be matched.
With 60 Grand Slams to their names, it begs the question how much is enough. Federer could’ve retired five years ago and still gone down as perhaps the greatest ever.
The reason why they have carried on is the reason behind their success.
They are hungry for more, simply born winners.
With the arrival of Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas over the past few years, the ‘Big Three’ have still arguably dominated the sport.
It would seem only age can defeat them.
