Struggling with rheumatoid arthritis, a former world no.1 and a Major champion, Caroline Wozniacki had to call it a career back at the Australian Open in January. In the third round, the Dane lost to Ons Jabeur, heading towards a deserved retirement and enjoying some usual things outside tennis with her husband.
For years, Wozniacki has been a close friend with Serena Williams, sharing good and bad moments with the American and even playing together in Auckland at the beginning of this season, losing to Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-4 after a fantastic week and a lot of fun on the court.
Watching the US Open only via TV, Caroline would love to see Serena lifting that elusive 24th Major crown this week, backing her friend to go all the way and match Margaret Court’s record. Competing at home Major for the 20th time, Serena Williams is through to the 14th semi-final and the 11th in a row!
The 39-year-old American had to work hard in the previous rounds, battling past Sloane Stephens, Maria Sakkari and Tsvetlana Pironkova in three sets to reach the 39th Major semi-final, facing another good friend Victoria Azarenka in the battle for the final.
Recently, Serena took down Pironkova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, overcoming a slow start to overpower the Bulgarian and remain on the title course.
At 3-3 in set number two, Williams shifted into a higher gear, rattling off nine out of final 11 games to cross the finish line and stay on her mission.
Serena claimed the 23rd Major title at the Australian Open 2017, taking a break to give berth to a daughter and returning in 2018 when she reached the final at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Serena did the same a year ago, dropping all four title matches and hoping to change that this weekend in New York.
Serena Williams is chasing the 24th Major at the US Open.
“I love watching Serena, and I hope she is going to win her 24th Major. I think she deserves it. She’s been so close so many times, and I hope she will go the whole way this time.
It’s so different looking on from afar, much less stressful, and I can enjoy the sport that I love. Many European players choose not to play in New York because of the pandemic, but at the same time, we’ve gotten some great matches and great players coming up.
Serena Williams and Caroline Woznicki are great friends
I also think the main thing is that a lot of people are watching Serena, and I hope she can get her 24th this time around,” Caroline Wozniacki said.
