When you think of Serena Williams and Venus Williams, the first thing that comes to mind is shock and awe at the amount of talent that was present within one family. While Venus Williams was dominating the sport in her early twenties, no one expected that her younger sister would also become so dominant.
However, that’s exactly what happened. Not only did Serena match her sister, but she also exceeded the achievements of Venus Williams.
That also led to a pretty competitive rivalry between the two which became synonymous with an entire era of women’s tennis. Throughout all this, one thing which has remained constant is their love and support for each other.
They never let their on-court rivalry affect their personal relationship. Venus Williams has always been pretty vocal about the affectionate nature of Serena. She tried to define the nature of their relationship in an interview.
What did Venus Williams say about Serena Williams?
Venus Williams talked about the dynamics of her bond with Serena. People often expect the elder sister to have a protecting attitude for their younger sibling. However, Serena has always been more protective.
“The best advice I ever got was always compete, Serena Williams told me that. The thing people don’t know about my relationship with Serena is that she’s very protective.
Even as the younger sister she’s very protective. Serena still copies everything that I do but I also copy everything that she does. It’s a codependency.”
It’s easily visible that the two have a lot of warmth in their relationship.
While many tried to cook up rumors of disaffection between the two in their early years of dominance, the two always shut them up with their absolute commitment to standing up for each other whenever required.
Their fans would certainly hope for this to continue for the remaining part of their careers.
