Donald Trump wanted the Nobel Peace Prize. But once again, the award went to someone else.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday that Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, 85, of South Africa, has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong commitment to peace, human rights and international law.
Pillay, a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has spent decades fighting injustice, defending human rights and strengthening international courts.
Her career includes challenging South Africa’s apartheid system and helping establish accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Trump Wanted the Prize. The Nobel Committee Had Other Plans.
Trump has repeatedly argued that his diplomatic accomplishments deserve Nobel recognition.
But the committee chose Pillay, emphasizing the importance of international law at a time when global conflicts are increasing and international institutions face growing political pressure.
The message from Oslo was unmistakable: This year’s prize recognizes a lifetime of defending justice through international law.
The award, worth approximately $1.2 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10.
And Donald Trump? He’ll have to wait another year.
